Why We Give

Giving isn't about what God needs from us. It's about what God is doing in us — and through us in Battambang.

It starts with God

We give because God gave first

Every breath, every meal, every person we love is a gift. And God's greatest gift was his Son, Jesus. Our giving is never a payment — it's a grateful response to a generous God.

John 3:16 · James 1:17

The inside story

What giving does in our hearts

God doesn't need our money — he owns everything. But he knows that our hearts are often held tight around what we have. Giving is one of the ways he opens our hands, and our hearts.

A closed fist can't receive anything. An open hand can give — and be filled.

  • 1. It points our heart toward God

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Our hearts follow our money. When we give to God's work, we're not just moving money — we're training our hearts to love what God loves.

    Matthew 6:19–21

  • 2. It sets us free from money's grip

The Bible warns that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and that life is not measured by what we own. Every time we open our hand and give, money loses a little more of its hold on us. Generosity is freedom.

    1 Timothy 6:10, 17–19 · Luke 12:15

  • 3. It grows our trust in God

Holding on tightly is often fear: “What if there isn't enough?” Giving is a step of faith that God really is our provider. Jesus promises that when we seek God's kingdom first, our Father knows what we need.

    Matthew 6:31–33 · Philippians 4:19

  • 4. It makes us more like Jesus

Jesus was rich, yet for our sake he became poor, so that through his poverty we might become rich. When we give, we reflect the generous heart of the One who gave everything for us.

    2 Corinthians 8:9

  • 5. It brings joy and contentment

Jesus said it is more blessed to give than to receive. Generous people discover a joy that wanting more can never give — and learn the secret of being content because God has promised never to leave us.

    Acts 20:35 · Hebrews 13:5 · Philippians 4:11–13

  • 6. It is worship that comes from gratitude

King David prayed, “Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.” We don't give to earn God's love — we give because we already have it. Giving is simply saying thank you.

    1 Chronicles 29:14 · Psalm 24:1 · James 1:17

Through the whole Bible

God's people have always given

  1. Abraham gives a tenth

Long before any law, Abraham gave a tenth of everything to honour God after a great victory — a thank-you for God's faithfulness.

    Genesis 14:18–20

  2. The firstfruits of the harvest

Israel brought God the first and best of their harvest, not the leftovers — trusting that the God who gave this harvest would provide the next one.

    Proverbs 3:9–10 · Deuteronomy 26:1–11

  3. The widow's two small coins

Jesus watched rich people give large gifts, then praised a poor widow who gave two tiny coins — all she had. God measures the heart, not the amount.

    Mark 12:41–44

  4. Jesus gives everything

The greatest gift in history: God so loved the world that he gave his only Son. Every gift we give is a small echo of this one.

    John 3:16

  5. The early church shares

The first believers shared what they had so that no one among them was in need — and people were drawn to Jesus by their love.

    Acts 2:44–47 · Acts 4:32–35
